MAELI CHEREL - CURRICULUM VITAE
I have a vivid imagination and have always had an interest in the visual arts, music, and literature. As a child I would get lost in books- fascinated by the fictional worlds created by authors, illustrators, playwrights, and graphic novelists. At school, I was able to express this imagination through my artwork. Since starting the Set and Costume design course at WAAPA in 2016 I have found myself able to develop creatively and use the skills I have gained through my professional engineering experience to grow artistically.
Through my role as a designer on a variety of productions I have learnt the challenging aspects of the creative industry process: from the design journey with directors/ choreographers, to the considerations of practicality/ budget limitations, and communication with all departments involved to help create and achieve an artistic vision. I love to be involved in all the aspects of the production design and enjoy building, making, painting and sewing the worlds into shape.
In 2018 my design for the Inconsequential Lives of Little Fish was nominated for Best Stage Design at the Performing Arts Awards (PAWA) 2018.
